Background

Liz Bromley, Chief Executive Officer of NCG, has been awarded Business Leader of the Year at the North East Chamber of Commerce’s Inspiring Women in Business Awards 2025. The annual awards recognise women making significant contributions to their industries, their organisations, and the region.

The Business Leader of the Year category honours women with a strong regional presence who show vision, innovation, and leadership while supporting both business and community. Bromley’s win reflects her strategic direction, her role in reshaping NCG’s culture, and the organisation’s achievements since she became CEO in 2019.

Under her leadership, NCG has strengthened collaboration across its seven colleges, creating a unified and high-performing further education group. This teamwork has helped improve teaching quality, financial results, and student success. Bromley also guided the organisation through the pandemic while continuing to raise Ofsted ratings.

Today, NCG stands as the UK’s largest provider of further education for 16–19-year-olds and the biggest provider of higher education within the FE sector. Bromley has also driven major investment in college estates and modern facilities, supported by successful bids for external funding. These upgrades include Newcastle College’s Advanced Manufacturing Suite and Kidderminster College’s Green Technology Centre, which train learners for key growth sectors.

Her people-focused leadership also shaped the NCG Leadership Hub, a professional development programme launched in 2020, which has supported more than 500 employees.

Accepting the award, Bromley said the recognition reflects the collective effort of staff across NCG’s colleges and their shared mission to transform lives through education. Event organisers said the judges were impressed by her steady leadership, investment in people, and clear impact on standards across multiple colleges.

The ceremony also featured performances by Newcastle College students and highlighted NCG staff shortlisted for additional awards, showcasing the group’s commitment to excellence.
