Background :

Women Leaders Support Advancement (WLSA) organised a free two-day medical outreach for 1,500 women and children in Kano State to improve healthcare access for vulnerable communities. The programme was held at Sharada Primary Healthcare Centre in Kano Municipal Council and drew beneficiaries from all 44 local government areas of the state.

The program provided free medical consultation, drugs, laboratory tests, and even referral services for people suffering from severe health problems. In addition, the organizers provided food items that included supplements rich in nutrients and boosters for their immune systems. Medical teams carried out screening and treatment for diabetes, hypertension, malaria, hepatitis and syphilis, along with HIV testing and counselling.

National Coordinator of WLSA, Fauziya Buhari-Ado, thanked the Kano State Government and partner organisations for supporting the programme. She said the outreach aimed to close gaps in healthcare access and improve the dignity and well-being of women, children and elderly residents. WLSA founder Deborah Jan Hornecker also urged individuals and corporate bodies to support similar efforts, adding that the group plans to expand such programmes across Nigeria’s 36 states.

Kano State Health Commissioner Abubakar Yusuf described the outreach as a timely intervention that would benefit many residents needing urgent care. Officials said Sharada Primary Healthcare Centre was selected to ensure easy access for targeted communities. Director of Medical Services Shehu Abdullahi said 64 health workers, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and counsellors, were deployed alongside volunteers for the exercise.

Community leaders and government officials attending the event also pledged support for future programmes focused on public health and social development in the state. The organisers said partnerships would remain important in reaching more underserved communities through similar medical missions in the future.
