Background:
A Shrewsbury-born businesswoman who turned a personal experience into a purpose-driven fashion brand has been recognised in the King’s New Year’s Honours.
Jo Tutchener Sharp, founder of the clothing and lifestyle brand Scamp & Dude, received an OBE for her services to fashion and charity. With her family still in Shropshire, Jo started the brand while recovering from brain surgery, creating her first product from her hospital bed.
Separated from her two young sons during recovery, Jo made a small “superhero buddy” to keep them company. That simple creation became the start of Scamp & Dude, a brand now celebrated for its social impact as much as its fashion. On receiving the award, Jo said she was “deeply grateful” and proud that the efforts of the past ten years had been recognised. She added that the brand’s goal has always been to combine purpose and kindness in everything it does.
Jo’s first idea inspired the brand’s initial charitable project, Superhero Sleep Buddies, which supports children who are separated from loved ones. For each Sleep Buddy sold, another is donated to a child who has lost a parent or is seriously ill. More than 10,000 Sleep Buddies have now been given to children in need.
In 2023, Jo launched the Super Scarf Mission, which provides scarves to women starting chemotherapy. For every scarf bought, another is given to a woman starting chemotherapy.
Jo’s OBE honours her fashion success and her commitment to using business to make a positive impact.
