Background:
A special International Women’s Day celebration in New Malden will bring together community members, volunteers and entrepreneurs to recognise women’s achievements and highlight issues affecting mothers and female founders. The event, organised by the Inner Wheel Club groups of Kingston and New Malden, will take place at the New Malden Methodist Church on Friday, March 6.
The programme will feature several guest speakers who will reflect on women’s leadership, wellbeing and social impact. One of the speakers is Emily Tredget, co-founder of Happity, who will share her personal and professional journey with the audience.
She will also speak about her recovery from postnatal depression and how a lack of open conversations about motherhood and mental health can lead to feelings of isolation. She believes that recognising loneliness and encouraging support networks can make a meaningful difference for new parents.
“I didn’t need to be ‘fixed’, but I needed to be seen and heard,” Tredget said while reflecting on her experience. She said loneliness can play a big role in both the start and continuation of postnatal depression, especially when people feel they cannot openly talk about their struggles.
Through Happity, Tredget helped build a platform that connects parents with baby and toddler classes. It helps families find local activities and supportive groups.
Along with sharing her personal experience, Tredget will also speak about the challenges women face in business. She noted that female-founded companies still receive only a small share of global venture funding. By sharing her journey of building a business, she hopes to encourage more women to start and grow their own ventures.
The event also reflects the message of International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8 each year, which recognises women’s achievements and promotes equality.
Organisers say the gathering reflects the Inner Wheel’s long-standing mission of “Service Through Friendship,” bringing people together to support community initiatives while recognising the contributions of women across different fields.
